Why We Never Skip Reading in Our Homeschool

In our home, reading is one of those sacred daily rhythms we never skip. No matter how busy the day feels, we always find time to gather around a book. For us, reading isn’t just about academics — it’s about bonding, imagination, and creating space for connection.

Reading Brings Us Together

Some days we snuggle on the couch with one story. Other days the kids take turns reading aloud — practicing their skills while learning to listen to one another. Sometimes we dive into group books that spark big conversations, and other times each child grabs something that fits their own interests. However it looks, it’s always time well spent.

More Than Core Learning

Reading is one of the most powerful ways to learn, and it’s at the heart of homeschooling. Beyond vocabulary and comprehension, books spark creativity, inspire new ideas, and build empathy. These simple moments open doors to imagination in a world where it often feels lost.

Affordable & Accessible

You don’t need a home full of books to make reading a priority. Libraries are an incredible (and free) resource for most families. Many even offer e-books and audiobooks for those who prefer digital.

Extending the Lesson

One of our favorite activities after reading is to let the kids create their own books. They love writing, drawing, and stapling their pages together into “published” works. It turns reading into a cycle of inspiration → imagination → creation.

✨ For us, reading isn’t a chore or a checkbox — it’s an anchor in our day, a chance to slow down, snuggle in, and spark creativity together.

📚 The Kinds of Books We Love Most

One of the best parts of daily reading is choosing what stories to bring into our home. We gravitate toward books that help our little ones handle big emotions, that encourage sharing, kindness, and love. Stories with core values and gentle tones give us words to grow by, and they often spark the most meaningful conversations.

But variety matters too. Alongside these heart-centered books, we reach for silly, fun stories that make the kids laugh out loud. Mixing playful reads with thoughtful ones keeps our reading time fresh and helps the kids look forward to it every day.

🌱 Building a Gentle Library

By choosing stories that both teach and delight, we’re slowly building a library that feels like an extension of our family values. Books have become a mirror for our children to see themselves and a window to learn about others with empathy and care.

📖 Books That Last Through Love

In our home, we don’t throw books away if they get ripped, bent, or a little chewed on by curious toddlers. Instead, we repair them with tape and care. These are often the books that have been read the most, passed around with the greatest excitement, and loved the hardest.

Repairing books gives us a chance to talk with our kids about gentleness and responsibility. We remind them that when we care for the things we love, they last longer. A patched-up book isn’t ruined — it’s a reminder of all the moments it has already shared with us and the stories still waiting inside.
